High-density lipoprotein (HDL) cholesterol

HDL (high-density lipoprotein) is sometimes called "good" cholesterol. A high HDL level is linked with a lower risk of coronary artery disease.

HDL may help lower the risk of coronary artery disease in several ways. HDL helps move cholesterol out of the body. HDL does this by binding with cholesterol in the bloodstream and carrying it back to the liver for disposal. HDL may also reduce inflammation that is linked with coronary artery disease and heart attacks.
