For most people, it's an easy and low-cost way to get moving and stay fit. Using a pedometer, step counter, wearable device, or fitness app can remind you to walk more. It can help you set goals and make walking a habit. Experts recommend at least 2½ hours of moderate activity, such as brisk walking, each week. It's fine to walk in shorter periods of time throughout your day and week that add up to the recommended goalsfootnote 1 Check with your doctor before you start a walking plan if you have heart problems or other health issues, or if you have not been active in a long time. Follow your doctor's instructions for safe levels of exercise. Using a pedometer, a step counter, a wearable device, or a fitness app on your phone is an easy and fun way to track how active you are. It adds up all the steps you take during the day. It can help motivate you to walk. A quick check may show that you need more steps for the day and help you set goals to take more steps. Some also can show you how many calories you've burned. Many of the apps are free. Follow these steps to get the best use out of your device. Put it on or activate it first thing in the morning as you get dressed. Leave it on until you go to bed.
